Questions shops ask about ADAS calibration

Calibration

What is ADAS calibration?

ADAS calibration is the process of aiming and teaching a vehicle's driver-assistance cameras, radars and sensors so they see what the manufacturer intended. It is required after repairs that move, replace or disturb those sensors, and it is done to a manufacturer-specific procedure using targets (static), a road drive (dynamic), or both.

When is ADAS calibration required after a repair?

When the manufacturer's repair procedure says so. Common triggers: windshield replacement, bumper cover or grille removal, mirror or liftgate work, sensor or camera replacement, front- or rear-end collision repair, wheel alignment or suspension work, module replacement, and related trouble codes. Send Essential ADAS the estimate and we identify the required calibrations before starting.

Does a windshield replacement require calibration?

On most vehicles with a forward-facing camera behind the glass, yes. The camera's view changes when the glass changes, so the manufacturer requires a static, dynamic or dual calibration afterward. Essential ADAS performs all three for glass shops and body shops in Central Texas, with the OEM procedure cited on the invoice.

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?

Static calibration is performed indoors with the vehicle stationary and manufacturer-specified targets set at measured distances on a level floor. Dynamic calibration is performed by driving at set speeds on marked roads with a scan tool connected. Some systems require both. The manufacturer's procedure decides which, and Essential ADAS follows it.

Why does the vehicle need an alignment before calibration?

Cameras and radars are calibrated relative to the vehicle's thrust line. If the alignment is off, the sensor is aimed at the wrong point even though the calibration passes on the tool. Many OEM procedures require a verified 4-wheel alignment first. Essential ADAS performs the alignment on the same handoff and includes the printout.

Which makes and models do you calibrate?

All major domestic, Asian and European makes, including Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Ford, GM, Stellantis, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla. The full list of makes and system names is on the Vehicles page.

What if a calibration fails or will not complete?

We stop, find the cause (alignment out of specification, a bent bracket, non-OEM glass, a wrong part, hidden damage), document it with photos and scan data, and call you before any additional work. The finding comes to you in writing for the supplement.

What is the road test for?

After calibration, a 5-mile minimum ADAS verification road test confirms each equipped system (lane keeping, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, emergency braking) operates on the road, not just on the tool. The record of route, miles and systems verified goes in the documentation package.

Process

How do you know which calibrations a vehicle needs?

We run the estimate and VIN through an ADAS identification platform, pull the manufacturer's procedures and position statements, and list the required operations before starting. You receive that list with the citations, and it is the basis of the invoice.

Do you pick up and deliver?

Yes. Pickup and delivery are included for shops inside our Central Texas service area. Drop-off at 35931 Ronald Reagan Blvd, Georgetown, TX 78633 is also welcome.

How long does a calibration take?

Most jobs are back the next business day. A single calibration takes roughly one to three hours of shop time including scans, prep and the road test; an alignment or multiple systems add time. We confirm the return time when we confirm the job.

Do you scan the vehicle before and after?

Yes, on every job. A pre-service full-module scan is included at check-in, and a post-calibration scan follows the work. Both reports are in the documentation package.

Do you provide documentation for insurance supplements?

Yes, with every job. The package includes the calibration identification with OEM citations, pre- and post-repair scan reports, the alignment printout when performed, calibration reports, the 5-mile road-test record, photos and an itemized invoice, delivered as one PDF. See the Documentation page.

Are you a mobile calibration service?

Essential ADAS calibrates in a dedicated facility in Georgetown, Texas, because static calibrations depend on a level floor, measured target distances and controlled lighting. Pickup and delivery are included, so the vehicle comes to the bay and back without your staff leaving the shop.

Pricing

What does ADAS calibration cost?

Pricing is per operation: each calibration, scan, alignment and reset is its own line with its own OEM justification, so the invoice maps to the estimate. Pickup, check-in, the pre-service scan and calibration prep are included at no charge. Multiple static calibrations on one vehicle receive a labor-overlap discount. Request the rate card on the Pricing page.

Do you work with insurer and DRP price guides?

Yes. Where a carrier's price guide governs the job, we apply it. Every line still carries the OEM procedure citation, which is what gets the line approved.

What if the warning light comes back after the vehicle is returned?

If a system we calibrated sets a related code or fails verification after return, and the vehicle has not been repaired or disturbed since, we re-scan and recalibrate at no charge.

Company

Are you part of Alliance Collision Centers?

Essential ADAS shares ownership with Alliance Collision Centers and began as its in-house calibration operation. It is a separate company with its own address and staff. Your customer's information stays with your job, and we do not market repair services to the vehicle owners you send us.

Do you calibrate for dealerships?

Yes. Dealership body shops and service lanes send us overflow, other-brand vehicles, and vehicles they do not have targets or software for. We pick up from your lot, attach documentation to your RO number, and bill from one rate card.

What areas do you serve?

Georgetown, Round Rock, Austin, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, Liberty Hill, Hutto, Taylor and Jarrell, with pickup and delivery included. Other Central Texas locations by arrangement; call (737) 279-4863.
